It works well in westerlies as a bay run, and on easterlies or north easterlies it is a good practice run for bigger on shore conditions where the swells get a bit more blocky. Here I switch back to the next size up axis 40skinny rear foil, and Its truly shocking how much a 5mm change of average chord can make. I actually just sold my 50skinny… Im of the mind that I won’t be using anything bigger than the 45 now with my current foils. I tend to keep some gear that I don’t use as my girlfriend is progressing also through the foil range a few steps behind me. It’s cool watching and contemplating her progression as I have a hand in making some of the decisions as well as listening to her thoughts on the results of our choices. It makes for a full spectrum data set and keeps things real. Anyway… on this run I’m use the 1401 with 40 skinny just after the last vid where the only difference was me using the 35skinny. I talk a bit about mast height and a potential way to understand where your at with it by mentioning the foil should be viewed as under your back foot. This also works when winging and can be a bit of an eye opener for people. Often we are looking forward over the trough and see the height of the nose of the board but this is very misleading and holds us back from riding our foils high… when truly riding your foil high the visual cue up front will at first seem a bit alarming! I remember being afraid of mast height when doing a dw run, I then got tired and a bit sick of touching down and forced my self to explode via a couple breaches to understand it… I soon felt the difference height in your riding gives you, and quickly began to appreciate it. I remember thinking holy shit this is truly a 3 dimensional game and riding with height has increased my playground by nearly 50%. I now had twice as much space to play my game! And enjoyed the extra space as freedom of movement… Again… anyway. What else? Ah timing the bumps a bit. I see a lot of guys panic riding and I get it. There’s a lot going on out there to think and feel. If you can, slow it all down. The faster you race to a bump the faster you need another one as you wiz through it. There not much to be gained at this level by speeding around. It’s like a panic attack that just keeps building the more you feed it! Slow down breath and try to make better sense of your surroundings. Enough of all that I need to go and get on the water!
